Airborne early warning aircraft (AEW&C)

Air

An aircraft carrying a large radar, often in a rotating dish on its back, that can see aircraft, missiles and ships hundreds of kilometres away and direct friendly fighters. It works like a flying control tower.
Along with tanker aircraft that refuel jets in mid-air, these 'force multipliers' make an air force far more effective than its number of fighters alone suggests.
